The Soulprint Files: Episode 1
Outbreak and Break-In

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…“What’s wrong with her?!?!” Yung Venuz yells. Dr. Edward Grail thumbs back the lid of Elspeth Venutti’s bruise-rimmed eye. “Why didn’t Horace contact me sooner?” he says. “This is advanced…”

…The wall of the Grail Free Clinic explodes inwards as an armored truck rams through it. “Hand over the Logrix!” a steel-jawed mutant shouts, firing his AK-47 in the air.

…A motorcycle-helmet-wearing figure in black scoops up Dr. Grail’s massive armored trunk with one hand and rides off on a motorbike. “The Church of Man thanks you for your donation.”

…“You have to get that chest!” says Dr. Grail, grabbing Gregor’s arm. “Make sure its contents reach Horace Venutti!”

Malachai cranks the wheel of his SUV, side-swiping the motorbike in an old train tunnel and forcing its helmeted driver off the road.

…Yung plants his foot on Dr. Grail’s armored trunk. “I’m on the case,” he says, as he shoots the motorcyclist in the leg.

Teresa runs forward as something on the motorcyclist’s body begins to hum. Flexing her robotic arm, she throws the figure off of the catwalk of the abandoned garage.

…The figure’s helmet falls free, revealing an exact duplicate of Raymond’s features, just before the motorcyclist’s leather jacket explodes, filling the garage with fire and smoke.

A Box Within a Box

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…A gas-mask clad Triad member cocks a revolver at Elspeth Venutti’s temple, standing in the sun roof of Malachai‘s hot-wired SUV. “Hand over the medicine Grail gave you,” he barks in Cantonese, "and you’ll get your girl back."

Gregor’s mental blast flings Gas Mask out of the car, as a red-scarfed Triad lady shouts, “Just play along! He wont hurt the girl!” and the Triad goons close ranks to attack.

…Yung blows a Grail clinic nurse, now revealed to be a Triad member, out of the car, as Malachai shoots the Triad wheelman and Gregor, Raymond, and Teresa clean up the goons.

…Red Scarf (Jessica) grabs Gas Mask (Sheng) and vanishes in a swirl of psychic energy.

…“You brought back my little girl,” Horace Venutti says in the back room of Club Enigma. “And the medicine from Grail…?”

…Inside the chest, Teresa finds nine doses of a clear liquid in syringes, along with a leather-and-brushed-steel briefcase. Malachai undergoes vaccination first, followed by Yung and Elspeth, though Teresa knows the girl is too far gone to be saved by a vaccine.

…Raymond thumbs open the briefcase, the combination to which is his birth date, and reveals an odd machine: two dials, five buttons, a gauge marked “Person,” “Place,” “Thing,” and a glass lens affixed to a half circle of flexible metal.

…A KSH newsfeed shows Raymond shooting an Asian-looking man in the face, and calls all five members of the team “assassins” who are “armed and dangerous.”

Chapels Perilous

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…Teresa places the glass lens over Yung’s eye and twirls the knobs on the mysterious mechanical detector. “What were you doing in your room?” she asks. “Carving BIG MONI BIZNEZZ into this shotgun, yo!” Yung declares. The detector’s needle shoots to the symbol for “Person.”

…Petunia Twai launches herself, stilettos-first, at a cigar-smoking mercenary captain from DefenseTech, as goons-for-hire pour into Club Enigma. “We’re looking for five assassins…” the captain begins.

…“Someone wants to frame your friend,” Horace Venutti tells his son, Yung. “You better find out who…and why.”

…A swaying camera angle reveals that the Wing-Arasaka employee that Raymond assassinated must have been on a boat.

…“You want to join us?” the Church of Man mutant says to Gregor. “Find Brother Burke.”

…Brother Burke’s face changes as he looks at Raymond. “You want to get into Grail? I can help you. But whatever cure he’s got for the raccoon virus, I want it delivered to the people on the Lower Tier…”

Mop Bosses

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…Yung puts the finishing touches on a buxom redhead, holding a duster in one hand and an Uzi in the other, spraypainted on the side of a while panel van.

"'Mop Boss'?" Malachai says, reading the logo sprayed above the cartoon.  "Don't you think that's a little…obvious?"

"No way, man!" Yung replies, pulling down the bandana covering his nose and mouth.  "We're incognito as shizz.  …Get it?  In-cog-NEAT-o?"

Malachai rolls his eyes.

…A young guard named Jackson stops their van at the entrance to the Grail parking deck, his eyes glazing over as the power of the team's mutant accomplice works on him.

…Malachai pins a security guard against the wall outside of Grail's office as the rest of the team slips inside.  "Just keep quiet…" the mob hit man says.

"Youll never get away with this…" the officer hisses back.

…Grail's private safe swings open under Raymond's hands, revealing a second mysterious device and a journal, just as Teresa finds letters from a Wing-Arisaka engineer named Siegel Tokihiro to Grail.

…Teresa activates her grav plate, sending an elevator full of DefenseTech mercenaries plummeting to their death.  Gregor barks out, "This way!" as he opens a hidden stairway leading down to Grail's private spinner garage.

…"C'mon Mal. I rocked the house just then, yo," Yung says as he jukes Grail's spinner out of the path of two DefenseTech vehicles.  Malachai rolls his eyes.

Neon Dream

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…Raymond looks around at his few pieces of scattered furniture and clucks his tongue at the careless job someone did in rifling through his apartment.

…“What the situation like on the Lower Tier?” Malachai asks Jimmy the Finger through the latter’s car vidphone. “Dunno,” Jimmy replies, “everything’s quarantined. We can barely get in and out of Club Enigma…”

…Raymond runs pell mell down the hall, past a row of waiting Los Santos police officers, as Malachai caps a beat cop in the face and Yung rolls down the hall on a maintenance cart, shotgun sounding (its airhorn).

…“We can use the drug running tunnels to get to the Lower Tier,” Yung says. “Can’t take a car in, yo. Only motorcycles.” He grins.

…Teresa carefully bleaches some needles and draws Yung’s and Malachai’s blood. “You’re clean,” she says, terse as always.

…“The corporations must be brought down so the common people can rise,” the black-coated mutant tells Gregor, his voice hazy and dreamlike. “Join us in the Canyon Orchards…” “Who are you?” Gregor asks, “What do you know about the Raccoon Virus and the vaccine?” But the other mutant is gone, and Gregor is alone outside the lab.

…“He’s…infected, for lack of a better word…by nanoviruses,” Teresa whispers to Raymond, looking over at the Venutti hit man whose blood she just tested. At that moment, the hit man’s face goes blank and he pulls a grenade out of his pocket…

We're On a Boat

This week on The Soulprint Files…

…“We’re in Triad territory,” Malachai says, as the group makes their way through the Lower Tier.

“The Grail Clinic is just a little further up this way, I’m sure,” Raymond replies, even as Triad bikers come roaring down the tunnel.

…“The barricades are weak,” Gregor tells the lead biker as they square off in front of the clinic.

“We could break through,” says another Triad member, in Cantonese.

…“This looks like the place,” Raymond says, observing the conspicuous security camera outside the broken-down barge labeled Phillip Feeney.

…“These are Siegel Tokihiro’s files,” Teresa tells Raymond. Just then, Yung busts back into the barge from his perch on the roof.

“Guys, there’s something banging on the smokestack…”

…Gregor and Malachai blast cybernetic limbs and torsos with their minds and guns, as Raymond feels an uncanny sense of connection while looking at the faceless replicant lunging toward him…

Mutant Fruit

This week on The Soulprint Files:

…“It’s some kind of…of network,” Teresa mutters, tapping through the files on Siegel Tokihiro’s computer. “At its center…something called the Demiurge.”

“Where is the center?” Gregor asks.

Teresa turns around, her cybernetic eye gleaming. “Grail Biotechnica. The Rosa Tower.”

…“Yo. This is it,” Yung says, landing the stolen spinner. Canyon Orchards teem with life, a stark contrast to the barren kipple in the foothills just a half-mile away. Vibrant, mutated fruit hangs from black and withered trees. Mutants of all shapes and descriptions have pitched tents under the trees.

…“We will reclaim the city,” Brother Trevelyan preaches from the porch of the orchard’s farmhouse. “We will tear down the skyscrapers and make all people equal!”

“Tch,” Raymond snorts.

“You’ll never succeed,” says Gregor. “You have…what…a couple dozen mutants? Against the DefenseTech militia?”

“The Lower Tier will rise up to join us. All who believe in equality will fight by our side.” Trevelyan smiles a calm, confident smile.

…Malachai and Norris, the Venutti butler, pick up the unconscious Elspeth just as the vaccinated goombas begin bearing down on them. “GET TO THE TUNNEL!” Malachai yells to Horace Venutti.

…“I will be here, my child,” Mother Superior tells Teresa, “praying for the city.”

“…cool,” Teresa says.

…Outside on the streets, violence has erupted. Lower Tier cyborgs and Triad members are battling DefenseTech mercs and LSPD cops. With uncanny coordination, the vaccinated citizens of the Middle Tier fall into formation and join the fray against the Lower Tier rioters.

And above it all, the towers of Grail Biotechnica loom.
